Maria Herrera, Ph.D., ABPP

About Dr. Herrera

Dr. Herrera is a CA-licensed psychologist and board-certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Herrera’s passion is working with individuals who have dual physical (chronic illness) and psychological conditions.  She was a Research Assistant and Program Manager at the University of San Francisco School of Medicine/San Francisco General Hospital, working with Spanish and English-speaking smokers with depression.  Dr. Herrera later received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and studied abroad in Mexico City at the Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico, taking courses in psychology and art.   

Dr. Herrera completed a research fellowship at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  She completed internship at the Veteran Affairs San Diego Healthcare System/ UC San Diego School of Medicine and residency in Behavioral Medicine and Primary Care Mental Health at the Veteran Affairs Northern California Health Care System.  She has extensive work with pre-surgical medical evaluations and health psychology. 

Dr. Herrera’s approach to therapy is integrated, pulling from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.  She is also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy.

Furthermore, Dr. Herrera is well-versed with military populations.  She served Active Duty in the United States Navy as a psychologist and completed two back-to-back aircraft carrier deployments and two Military Training Facility tours.  She held several leadership positions in the outpatient and intensive outpatient settings.  She is a recipient of a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal and two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals, as well a several unit awards.
